Women And Addiction

I have been thinking about addiction (and not just in terms of eating disorders) a lot lately. I think addiction is definitely a component of eating disorders, and that using some of the same methods that are used in alcohol and drug treatment can also be useful in treating eating disorders. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that a lot of the women I was in treatment with were also dealing with comorbidities such as drug and alcohol addiction. At times the whole floor (but me) went to AA.

A long time ago, I downloaded the song “Not An Addict” by K’s Choice, and I remember being struck by how much I could relate to the song, even though I have not dealt with drug addiction. It made me realize how to some extent, the addiction is interchangeable. It can be drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, sex, hoarding, whatever. I think “Not An Addict” is one of the best descriptions of what it’s like to deal with addiction, and the pain beneath it. It’s a powerful, honest song.
